YouTube thumbnail sizes — the complete guide

YouTube stores each video's thumbnail at multiple resolutions on its CDN. Not every size is available for every video — older or low-view videos may only have the smaller sizes. Here is what each size is and when to use it.

Size nameDimensionsCDN filenameBest for
MaxRes1280 × 720 pxmaxresdefault.jpgBest quality — print, presentations, design work
SD / High640 × 480 pxsddefault.jpgGood — blog post headers, emails
HQ Default480 × 360 pxhqdefault.jpgGood — social media previews
MQ Default320 × 180 pxmqdefault.jpgOK — small web thumbnails, cards
Default120 × 90 pxdefault.jpgTiny previews only — always available
Why is MaxRes sometimes missing? YouTube only generates a MaxRes thumbnail when the creator uploads a custom thumbnail with sufficient resolution. Older videos uploaded before 2012, auto-generated thumbnails, and some Shorts may not have a MaxRes version. In that case, use SD (640×480) as your best-quality option.

What is the recommended YouTube thumbnail size?

YouTube's official recommendation is 1280×720 pixels at a 16:9 aspect ratio, under 2MB, in JPG, PNG, GIF, or BMP format. This is what MaxRes delivers. At this size the thumbnail looks sharp in search results, the homepage feed, recommended panels, and embedded players on external sites.

What makes a great YouTube thumbnail — 6 rules the data backs up

According to YouTube, 90% of the best-performing videos have custom thumbnails. Analysing thousands of high-CTR thumbnails reveals six consistent patterns.

Show a human face

Thumbnails with an expressive face get significantly higher CTR. Emotion — surprise, excitement, concern — drives clicks more than any graphic.

3–5 words max

Text should reinforce the title, not repeat it. Use large, bold, high-contrast text — it needs to be readable at 120×90 pixels.

High contrast colours

Yellow, red, and orange on dark backgrounds consistently outperform muted palettes. Your thumbnail competes with dozens of others in the feed.

Rule of thirds

Place your main subject at the intersection of thirds, not the centre. It creates visual tension that draws the eye.

Design for mobile first

Over 70% of YouTube watch time is on mobile. If your thumbnail doesn't read clearly at 320×180, redesign it.

Be consistent

Channels that use a consistent thumbnail style — same font, colours, and layout — build recognition that drives return viewers to click faster.

Everything about downloading, using, and understanding YouTube thumbnails.

Ask a question
Downloading thumbnails for personal, educational, or research use is generally permitted since YouTube serves them publicly via its CDN. Using someone else's thumbnail commercially or re-uploading it as your own content may infringe copyright — always get permission for commercial use.
The highest quality is MaxRes at 1280×720 pixels (16:9). Not all videos have MaxRes available — if it is missing, SD (640×480) is the next best option. This tool shows all available sizes so you can always grab the highest quality that exists.
Yes. Paste the full Shorts URL (youtube.com/shorts/VIDEO_ID) and the tool extracts all available thumbnail sizes just like a regular video.
YouTube only generates a MaxRes thumbnail when the creator uploads a high-resolution custom thumbnail. Older videos, auto-generated thumbnails, and some Shorts may not have a MaxRes version — the tool will mark it as unavailable and highlight the next best size.
Yes. Both youtube.com/watch?v=VIDEO_ID and youtu.be/VIDEO_ID formats are supported, as well as youtube.com/shorts/VIDEO_ID for Shorts and youtube.com/live/VIDEO_ID for live streams.
For design work, presentations, or print — always download MaxRes (1280×720). For blog post headers or email — HQ (480×360) or SD (640×480) works well. Default (120×90) is only for tiny previews in lists or tables.
Absolutely — studying high-performing thumbnails in your niche to understand composition, colour, and text placement is one of the best ways to improve your own CTR. Just do not re-upload someone else's thumbnail as your own.
No limit at all. Download as many as you need — completely free, no daily cap, no signup, and no watermark added to downloaded images.
