Why do different countries calculate age differently?

In most Western countries, you are considered 0 years old at birth and gain a year on each birthday. But this is not universal. The traditional Korean age system counts everyone as 1 at birth and adds a year every January 1st - so a baby born on December 31st turns 2 years old the very next day. The Japanese Kazoedoshi system works similarly. South Korea officially adopted the international age system in 2023, but cultural use of the traditional system persists.

The Islamic Hijri calendar is a purely lunar calendar of 354 days per year, making Hijri ages slightly higher than Gregorian ages. The Hindu Vikram Samvat calendar is a lunisolar calendar that runs approximately 56–57 years ahead of the Gregorian calendar year.
